From Brothersville to a name drawn from Isaiah
The community now called Hephzibah was first known as Brothersville, for three brothers who settled near one another. In October 1860, the Hephzibah Baptist Association founded a seminary there that grew into the town's defining institution, and the settlement took the Association's own name — Hephzibah, from Isaiah 62:4, meaning roughly "my delight is in her." The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town on October 24, 1870 — misspelling "Hephzibah" in the incorporating act itself, in the index, title, and body alike.
